Codes of Conduct for Election Observers and Media

Supported by FES Madagascar and the ECF-SADC (SADC Electoral Commissions Forum), CENI - the National Independent Electoral Commission of Madagascar, held meetings on 10-11 September 2018 with its electoral partners.

CENI, Electoral Partners and ECF-SADC:
These partners included the candidates for the Presidential Election scheduled for 7 November, 2018, the media and civil society organisations. The key conclusion of the meetings was that both the media and the election observers need to adhere to specific codes of conduct to ensure the smooth running of the entire electoral cycle. Experts and commissioners from the ECF-SADC contributed to the discussions by sharing their best practices. They drew attention to the fact that "the media, especially those with extensive coverage, can build or destroy a nation, because of the attitude adopted or the language used.” fesmedia Africa of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung supported a similar process in July in eSwatini together with the SADC Electoral Commission and MISA (Media Institute of Southern Africa) eSwatini.
